An ‘in-between substance’ is a recent phenomenon in our everyday life that we are all familiar with. In food we are familiar with products such as jello and tofu. Tofu is an important cultural food ingredient in the Chinese diet. DADA has adopted the idea of the carving tofu as a design inspiration to create the Land and Fang exhibition center. Carve a piece of fried tofu and you have the architecture. Simple conceptual idea with a rational methodology sets the bases to the architecture. The result is a rustic crust on the exterior and a sublime purl like finish on the interior that will give viewers a dreamlike experience as he experiences the internal cavities of this structure. It will, in fact, not feel like a real space; it as is as if one entered an internal cavity of a colloid or an organism. It will become the key exposition center in Langfang as all exhibits will be viewed with the most advanced virtual technology.
The architecture of the exposition center is to become an urban Icon in the city of Langfang. It is intended to serve as the cultural meeting place for local residences as well as serving Beijing and Tianjin. In the end, it is rather ambiguous in interpretation as to what the interpretation of this powerful icon is to signify. In any case, the architecture of the exhibition has incorporated this strong cultural ingredient into an elegant architectural form and created expressive strong timeless icon for the city of Langfang.
