In addition to designing the landscaping, Ai Weiwei curated the design of seventeen pavilions in the Jinhua Architecture Park along the riverside in Jinhua, Zhejiang, China. The project brought together sixteen other architecture offices to create a park that provides a range of facilities from a multimedia room to a tea house. The Neolithic Pottery Museum, designed by Ai Weiwei, is one of the seventeen pavilions. The design for this small museum for ancient Chinese pottery is derived from the profile of a vernacular house with a gabled roof. By employing a highly recognizable form, the museum fits subtly into the Chinese landscape. Upon entering however, the simple profile is revealed as a semi-submerged geometrical hexagon that harks back to the unearthing of the archaeological finds it houses. The museum is set into a slope, so that while only the long warehouse form is visible from the higher south elevation, the true hexagonal shape of the building is apparent on the north elevation, where the site slopes downward.
