Life is a theme and growth is a atate.
Before designing the project, we should understand its owner at frist. He is a friend of ours. In his living space ,he wishes to chat and drink tea with his loving flowers and plants, to collect infatuating past heritage. So the old warehouse built in 60’s becomes his best choice for his ideal life,and is named strangely “Studio without material “.We call know that the name means “free of charge”in Japanese.But we hold that only the owner himself knows its real joke:”In fact, there’re many materials in Studio without Material”.
After that, we start to think over two problems: fristly ,what is the life state for an artist living in studio without Material ,and
Secondly, what kind of space accords the life theme”without material “. Our “Hills House”team spent a whole year on designing and solving these two problems.
In the process of designing we fully comprehend the owner, his flowers and plants, every painting ,even every precious article. And all of them are well arranged. But the naturally-grown plant and the trace of life are difficult to be designed on the drawings. Finally we almost ignore the slightly stereotyped scheme drawing. Instead, we enter the work site to design and carry out construstion, together with the workers. At this time we feel to become craftsmen ourselves.
In the process of implementing. The designers always insist on weakening the existence of design, respect the original structure
and strengthen the owner’s love. In this proiect ,the designers are more like the participants in this life space. They are not meticulous about designing some unneccessary decorations.
We repaired the building appropriately , accomplished the basic function for living , reserved many used traces of the old house, restored the innate character of the building.We think it enough.
Perhaps some one think it simple and crude. But it just agrees
with the phrases of <Humble Room Epigraph> on the wall of the ower’s study:”…Zhuge’s Cottage in Nanyang ,Ziyun’s Pavilion in Xishu. Confucius interrogates: is there any humbleness?”
In the evening when all the flowers and plants were taken their places, we opened doors and windows , feeling a breath of air and seeing the whirl of trees. Fatty-apricot took off his clown-mask and drank a strong cup of “non- material coffee”with we . We wish for design to retreat, for life to advance, for design without designing and for design to grow up.
